Four Totally Natural Products for Tooth Whitening
Four All-natural Products for Tooth Whitening
If you’re looking to whiten your smile, you may think powerful chemical solutions from your dentist or drug store are the only option. Actually, there are several all-natural tooth whitening solutions available. You may even have them in your home right now. Here are four of the most common, and inexpensive, tooth whitening products out there.
Strawberries
This all-natural tooth whitener is of course seasonal, but if you have access to fresh strawberries this is probably the best tasting tooth whitener out there. Strawberries contain a substance called malic acid which is believed to help break down stains on teeth. This makes strawberries a natural and delicious choice for a natural tooth whitener.
During summer, enjoy fresh strawberries on a regular basis. This will start the process. If you really want to see results, though, try making a homemade strawberry toothpaste.
To make this all-natural whitening paste, combine a crushed strawberry with a sprinkle of baking soda. Brush your teeth with this paste once per week and see results over time. Don’t forget to follow up with a fluoride toothpaste to remove the natural sugars and acids in the strawberries.
Be careful not to overdo it with this solution. Once per week is often enough. Any more often and the acid in the strawberries can damage your enamel if you use it long-term.
Baking soda and Salt
Baking soda is an abrasive cleaner, meaning it can really scrub the surface of your teeth. This makes it a very effective all-natural tooth whitener. Baking soda added scrubbing power to the strawberry paste, but it can also be used in other tooth whitening solutions.
Perhaps the most powerful natural tooth whitening solution is baking soda and salt. When these two are combined (six parts baking soda to one part salt), a powerful all-natural tooth whitening powder is created.
This abrasive solution can be brushed onto teeth with a regular or spinning-head toothbrush for maximum effect. You only need one or two teaspoons of this powder, a little goes a long way.
The granules of salt create extra tooth whitening scrubbing power, but be aware that the high sodium content of this paste can be easily absorbed by your gums. If you’re on a restricted salt diet you may want to check with your doctor to make sure it’s okay to brush with a salt solution.
Just like the strawberries, you only want to use this treatment once per week so you don’t wear down your enamel over time. Baking soda is more gentle than commercial tooth whiteners, but like any tooth whitener it can still be damaging to enamel if it’s used too often over a long period of time.
Hydrogen peroxide
Next to baking soda, hydrogen peroxide is perhaps the best-known natural tooth whitener. You’ve probably seen baking soda and peroxide listed in your favorite brand of toothpaste. That’s because these two compounds have excellent tooth whitening power.
To use hydrogen peroxide in your tooth whitening regimen, you can mix a small amount with baking soda and brush as normal. Or you can just pour a small amount of hydrogen peroxide onto your toothbrush and brush as you normally would. If you use either of these methods, you’ll want to follow up with a fluoride toothpaste because the hydrogen peroxide is a great tooth whitener, but it won’t freshen your breath.
If you know you’ll be brushing twice – once with a tooth whitening solution and once with fluoride toothpaste – remember to brush gently. You don’t want to be too rough on your gums in your quest for whiter teeth.
As an alternate tooth whitening use for hydrogen peroxide, you can follow up your regular brushing routine with a mouthwash of one part hydrogen peroxide to two parts warm water. This mouthwash won’t give you the granulated scrubbing action of paste-based tooth whitening solutions, but it can help you maintain your efforts between treatments.
With any tooth whitening solution, remember a little can go a long way. Just as some professional tooth whitening treatments can damage tooth enamel over time, so too can all-natural whiteners. Remember not to overdo it, and enjoy your brighter smile.
