Why Do People Select Teeth Whitening?

The power of a smile has been the subject of many poems. A simple smile can help improve a difficult situation. A smile can even have a positive effect on bullies; that is the power of a good, clean smile. I should add, a good clean smile that includes brighter teeth. I’m sure you have noticed celebrities who sparkle, partly due to their bright, white, attractive smiles. It has never occurred to many that they, too, can have a bright, white smile. Today, a variety of products are available that can help whiten your teeth, restoring them to their original shade, or perhaps even a few shades lighter. It’s not necessary to have a bleaching process performed by the dentist; it can easily be done in the comfort of your own home, with very little fuss or mess. This is possible even if you are on a tight budget, as it requires a very small monetary outlay.

It is important to realize that each person’s teeth are different. Each person’s teeth have a unique shade which can be matched to standard shades. Before you can set realistic goals, this is the most important thing to truly understand. The first thing these products do is remove the stains from the teeth. Over the years, the teeth are exposed to various agents that stain them and cause a change in color. Without treatment, these stains will not go away. Many popular beverages, such as coffee, tea, colas and red wine are major contributors to tooth staining. Various other factors can cause this too. Carbamide peroxide is the active ingredient found in most teeth whitening products, and is responsible for bleaching any tooth stains. This ingredient is approved by the ADA and is included in most available products of this nature, although some use hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient instead. The products cause oxidation which removes the stains and restores the teeth to their natural shade. Crowns and other dental work will not be affected by the whitening process. So you should continue with your dental whitening procedure as long as necessary, and then make an appointment with your dentist to replace your dental work so that it matches the color of your teeth. Usually results will be evident after several applications of the tooth whitener and you can continue applications until you obtain the shade you desire. At that point, you can stop applying the product. Then there will be a short time when you will notice that the shade dulls and brightens until it finally stabilizes at a particular shade. Normally, this is much brighter than the shade you had when you began the whitening process. This is normal, so don’t be concerned. Once your teeth have completed the whitening process, you can get replacement crowns.

Price is a major consideration and, since most dental bleaching products contain the same active ingredients, you can select the one that is most cost effective. Some specially formulated products are PH balanced and have high adhesive qualities designed to increase their adhesion to the surface of the tooth. These are some of the things to think about when deciding how to whiten and brighten your smile.
