CBD oil has become an increasingly popular natural alternative to treating anxiety. But what is the Best brands of CBD oil for anxiety? What makes it work so well? And are there any side effects or risks?
Many people have touted CBD oil as a miracle solution for all sorts of issues, from chronic pain to epilepsy, with little scientific evidence to back up these claims. But the science behind CBD and anxiety does suggest that this cannabis-derived product has the potential to help some with their symptoms.
What is CBD oil?
CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is a type of cannabinoid that presents in abundance in the cannabis plant. When you consume or inhale marijuana or hashish, you are actually consuming many thousands of different chemical compounds, but the two most prominent ones are tetrahydro cannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).
The former produces the “high” associated with marijuana use, while the latter results in its anti-anxiety properties. It’s believed that CBD is responsible for at least 60% of cannabis’ medicinal benefits and up to 85% of its recreational ones.
There are other cannabinoids that can potentially be used to treat anxiety, but CBD is the most popular. This relates to the fact that CBD is non-psychotropic and you won’t experience any “high” or sedative side effects from consuming it. It also won’t show up on drug tests, making it one of the best-kept secrets in natural medicine.
Unlike THC, CBD does not make you feel high or stoned. Instead, it works by producing a calming effect on your body and mind by activating certain receptors in your brain called CB1 receptors (among others). These neurotransmitters then send messages to areas of your brain that control mood and emotions to help you relax and feel at ease.
CBD has also been demonstrated to have anti-anxiety properties when used with a specific form of valerian, which is a type of sedative herb. This combination is known as a “full-spectrum extract.” Full-spectrum extracts contain more than one cannabinoid and are referred to as “whole-plant extract.”
Full spectrum extracts also tend to be easier to obtain than CBD isolate, which is why it’s considered the best choice for most users. One thing that all types of extracts have in common is that they include almost every other compound in the cannabis plant but don’t contain high amounts of THC.
How does CBD work?
CBD oil interacts with receptors found in the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a term used to describe all of the cannabinoid receptors located throughout your body. As stated above, these CB1 receptors play a vital role in regulating mood and emotions. The endocannabinoid system includes two main types of receptors: CB1 and CB2. The ECS is responsible for helping you maintain homeostasis, which is the body’s ability to maintain its internal balance, or equilibrium.
You may have heard that balancing your body is like balancing your checkbook (for every credit there must be a debit). This analogy applies to the levels of cannabinoids in your ECS as well.
